Infinity Forest

About the project

The Infinity Forest is a green oasis amongst the hard, vertical walls of Penfold and Hosking Place. Normally used as a shortcut or smoking area, this forgotten alley's visitors will now find it transformed by a burst of concentrated nature. In the space between fire escapes, vehicle ramps and back door entrances, you will come upon tough timber walls that conceal a forest within. Entering this intimate urban living room, you discover yourself captured in an infinite view of a silver birch forest, where you can pause and reflect on the city above.

The City of Sydney and the project team gratefully acknowledge the support of the following companies:

The Team

  • Mathew Chan
    Architect
  • Isabel Cordeiro
    Artist
  • Katie Hepworth
    Urban Theorist

The infinity forest is an international collaboration between Architect Matt Chan, urban theorist Katie Hepworth, and Amsterdam-based artist Isabel Cordeiro, who have worked together since 2000 in Amsterdam, Berlin and now Sydney.

After completing architecture programs at the University of New South Wales and then the Berlage Institute in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Matthew Chan opened the Sydney-based collaborative design studio, Scale Architecture in 2004. With a body of work ranging from residential to large-scale urban projects, Matthew's main interest is engaging with the process of making the city.

Urban theorist Katie Hepworth also trained as an architect, and has since curated international exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne and Berlin. Based in Italy and Sydney and currently completing a doctorate on cultural studies, her focus is subtle spatial interventions that disrupt everyday behaviours.

Like Matt, Portuguese artist Isabel Cordeiro originally trained as an architect, but shifted her focus, developing her career as an artist in attending Rotterdam's Piet Zwart Institute. Now based in Amsterdam, she has received multiple prizes for her artwork, which has shown in the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Serbia and Germany over the past decade. Her work, which is highly influenced by architecture, aims to construct hidden space through painting.
